This recipe for Lemon Ginger Honey is as simple as the title. In a jar, place alternating layers of ginger and lemon slices, then pour honey into the jar. Let it “cure” in the fridge for a day, give it a shake or stir, and what you end up with is a lemon and ginger-infused honey syrup.

Once you’ve prepared a jar of lemon ginger honey, it can be added to herbal tea or plain hot water, used as a slightly diluted throat gargle, or taken by the spoonful for sore throats and coughs. If you can take the heat, cayenne or hot pepper sauce adds another level of inflammation and pain relief while also helping to clear congestion and warm the body.

Below, you'll find ideas aplenty for ways to use this tasty elixir, as well as all the ways it can support your health and wellness.

Health Benefits of Lemon Ginger Honey

Lemon ginger honey syrup isn't just delicious; it's also packed with health benefits. Here's why you should incorporate this simple yet potent concoction into your household apothecary:

1. Immune Support

Lemons are rich in vitamin C, known for its immune-boosting properties. Combined with the anti-inflammatory effects of ginger, this syrup can help strengthen your body's defenses against colds and flu.

2. Sore Throat Relief

The soothing properties of honey can provide relief for sore throats, while ginger's natural analgesic properties may help alleviate discomfort and inflammation.

3. Digestive Aid

Ginger is well-known for its ability to aid digestion and relieve nausea. Adding it to honey not only enhances the flavor but also makes it a gentle yet effective remedy for digestive issues.

4. Antioxidant Powerhouse

Both lemons and ginger are rich in antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

5. Thyroid Support

There are so many ways that ginger can support us as thyroid patients. It's a powerful anti-inflammatory with powerful antioxidant effects, which can help calm inflammation in the gut, and other factors that drive thyroid imbalance and autoimmunity.

Ginger is also particularly helpful with digestion. Those of us with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's often suffer from poor digestion, low digestive juices, slow metabolism, and constipation. Ginger is a known antidote for these symptoms. Throughout the digestive tract, it stimulates digestive juices and improves gastric motility.

Incorporating this homemade syrup into your household apothecary is a simple and delicious way to promote overall health and well-being. Whether you stir it into a soothing cup of tea or drizzle it over your chia pudding, you'll reap the benefits of this natural elixir.

Ways to Use This Lemon Ginger Honey

Once you've whipped up a batch of Lemon Ginger Honey, what can you do with it?? let's explore the myriad ways you can incorporate this versatile elixir into your daily routine. From soothing sore throats to enhancing your favorite beverages, here are some creative ways to enjoy the benefits of lemon ginger honey:

1. Tea Infusion

Add a spoonful of lemon ginger honey to your favorite tea for a soothing and flavorful beverage. Whether you prefer green tea, chamomile, or peppermint, the zesty kick of lemon and ginger will elevate your tea-drinking experience. (It's how I most often enjoy mine.) It's especially lovely paired with these health-supporting teas:

  • Tulsi Holy Basil Tea - This energizing and stress-relieving adaptogenic herb is my go-to when I'm feeling overwhelmed. A dollop of Lemon Ginger Honey makes this earthy blend more palate-pleasing.
  • Sun Goddess Matcha - For years, I've been starting my day with this unparalleled matcha. The slightly grassy flavor pairs beautifully with the bright citrus notes of lemon and the warmth of ginger.
  • Pique's Electric Turmeric Tea - Turmeric tea or turmeric-infused Golden Milk is prized for its anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, gut-healing, and mood-boosting properties. Adding a touch of lemon ginger honey can balance out the earthiness of turmeric, enhancing its overall taste profile.
2. Hot Water Elixir

If teas aren't your thing, a mug of hot water infused with this lemon ginger honey provides a burst of flavor alongside those soothing properties. Try it any time of day -- morning, afternoon, or evening -- for a more interesting way to hydrate than plain water.

PRO TIP: For a warming metabolism boost, or decongestant, try adding a shake or two of cayenne pepper to your mug.

3. Throat Gargle

At the first sign of a sore throat or cough, mix lemon ginger honey with warm water and use it as a soothing throat gargle. The combination of honey's soothing properties and ginger's anti-inflammatory effects can provide much-needed relief for irritated throats.

4. DIY Cough Syrup

Mix lemon ginger honey with a dash of cayenne pepper for a homemade cough syrup. The combination of honey's soothing properties, ginger's anti-inflammatory effects, and cayenne's warming sensation can help alleviate coughs and clear congestion.

5. Voice Support

Thyroid disorders can cause voice changes as a result of direct effects on vocal cord function or indirect effects on overall health. Lemon and ginger have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the throat and vocal cords, while honey helps lubricate the vocal cords making it easier to produce clear and resonant sounds.

PRO TIP: Doing some public speaking? Try a spoonful of this Lemon Ginger Honey beforehand. I often take a spoonful before I record my podcast to help prevent hoarseness (a pesky symptom I've struggled with more since my hypothyroidism diagnosis).

6. An Edible Gift! 🎁

Show them you care with a jar of this lemon ginger honey. It makes a delightful and thoughtful edible gift for friends, family, or coworkers, especially at holiday time when cold and flu season is revving up. Fill mason jars, add a decorative ribbon and a hand-written gift tag with instructions for use, and give your friends a dose of comfort and wellness.

PRO TIP: Need to make several gifts? Split the recipe (below), which makes 1 quart, into four 8-ounce jars.

There are so many ways to experiment with and incorporate lemon ginger honey into your thyroid-friendly lifestyle. Whether you're seeking a natural remedy for sore throats or simply looking to add a burst of flavor to your dishes, this homemade syrup is sure to become a staple in your kitchen.
